PURE ENERGY knows its insulation, our crews have installed over 1.3 million square feet of insulation in thousands of Arizona homes.  We love a good attic to crawl around in and enjoy seeing the tremendous impact a properly insulated home can make on a households energy costs.

WHAT DOES INSULATION DO?

Proper and adequate attic insulation can make all the difference when trying to keep heating and cooling costs low.  The typical Arizona attic is severely under insulated which allows the transfer of heat and cold to the home from the unconditioned attic space.  Insulation acts as a barrier between the extreme Arizona temperatures.  This barrier is measured in “R-value” which is a way to state the thermal resistance of the insulation.  A higher R value will mean a better insulating quality.  Typically, the thicker the insulation the better the r value and ability to keep your home comfortable.

IS MY HOUSE UNDER INSULATED?

In summer months attic temperatures can exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit which requires a significant r-value to properly stop heat gain into the home.  The US Department of Energy classifies Arizona as a class 2 heat zone and states a minimum of r-30 and recommends r-49.  In most cases PE Solar has found the average Arizona home to have less than r-20, which is significantly under insulated.  A home with inadequate insulation will add stress the HVAC equipment as the amount of heat gain entering the home is difficult to remove or maintain.  Often under insulated homes will have high energy costs from HVAC equipment running all hours of the day.  This will shorten the life of the equipment and the home will fluctuate in temperature making it uncomfortable to live in.

WHAT TYPE OF INSULATION IS BEST?

There are several types of insulation available to homeowners.  PE Solar recommends blown in insulation over rolled batts or foam.  Blown in insulation is superior in providing consistent coverage when compared to a fiberglass batt.  PE Solar uses a 100% fiberglass blown in insulation.  Fiberglass offers several benefit over blown in cellulose.  The benefits of fiberglass include a better level of fire protection, and moisture resistance.  Fiberglass is less likely to settle over the years from moisture absorption when compared to cellulose.  This ability to repel moisture allows fiberglass to stay thick and maintain its original r-value throughout its life.

WHAT WILL INSULATION SAVE ME?

A typical home will see an energy savings of 15-20%, while an extremely under insulated home may see a reduction in cost as high as 30%  The biggest impact of a insulation upgrade is arguably the extended life it will allow the homes HVAC equipment.
